It is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent enzyme that mediates the dimethylation of two conserved adenosines near the 3'-end of the rRNA in the small ribosomal subunit of bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes (Richter et al. 2010 ). Specifically, it mediates the methylation of the AA dinucleotide in the plant mitochondrial 18s rRNA, A|1914 and A|1915.
